If you are 36 or older you cannot register as a Slovenian citizen anymore. You can, however, apply for Slovenian Citizenship based on provisions of Article 13 of Citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia Act (extraordinary naturalization) if you fulfill the requirements.

3. EXCEPTIONAL NATURALIZATION (Article 13 of Citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia Act)

Individuals of Slovenian descent (up to the second generation in direct descent), who cannot register for citizenship (are older than 36 or none of the parents is a registered Slovenian citizen), may apply for Slovenian citizenship according to the provisions of Article 13 of Citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia Act.

The provision of Article 13 of the Citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia Act allows for the granting of citizenship of the Republic of Slovenia to persons if it is in the interest of the country due to scientific, economic, cultural, national or other similar reasons. The existence of circumstances that justify the reasons for this kind of citizenship being granted is established by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of the opinion of the competent authority.

In the procedure, the applicant must demonstrate:
1. Slovenian descent (up to the second generation in direct descent)
2. A multiannual active connection with the Republic of Slovenia; and
3. At least 5 years of activity in Slovenian associations, schools of Slovene language or Slovenian expatriate, emigrant or minority organizations. The applicant should provide the recommendations of the relevant organizations confirming his active connection with the Republic of Slovenia.

Exceptions from above mentioned criteria can only be granted by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.

Documents to be submitted:
1. Completed application form; must be filled out and signed by the applicant
2. Documents listed in the application form
3. Completed and signed permission to copy personal documents
4. Consular fee: 414 USD (Money Orders only; no checks or cash)

Please enclose also a cover letter with your contact information, stating what you are applying for and a complete list of enclosed documents.

All submitted documents must be translated into Slovenian language.

Please note the Embassy does not offer translation services.

The list of translators is available here. The Embassy does not guarantee the quality of the translation and is in no way connected to the persons and companies on the list.

Translations by applicants and translations using Google Translate are not adequate.

Official US documents (i.e. birth and marriage certificates, FBI Check) must be legalized with an Apostille Seal.

PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATE ORIGINALS REMAIN IN THE RECORDS IN SLOVENIA AND CANNOT BE RETURNED.

You should first obtain original birth and marriage certificates at Vital Records and then verify with the competent authority on the procedure of obtaining the Apostille seal.

Information how to obtain the original FBI Check is available here. FBI Check should be sent to the State Department  in Washington, DC for obtaining the Apostille seal. We recommend that you apply for an FBI Check after you have collected other certificates as FBI certificates older than three months will not be accepted.

Please note: Slovenian documents are officially recognized without an authentication, and no additional certification is needed. Copies will be accepted.

Legal representative

As the citizenship application according to the provisions of Article 13 can be time consuming and as all the documents are required to be translated to Slovenian, we recommend that you appoint a personal representative in Slovenia (family member, friend, legal advisor). With a power of attorney your representative can file the application on your behalf at the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Slovenia which is authorized to process the application.
