Residence permits

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION 

If you wish to stay in Slovenia for purposes other than those permitted on the basis of your visa, you are required to be in possession of a residence permit. The first temporary residence permit is issued by a respective Administrative Unit (upravna enota) in Slovenia and must be obtained prior to traveling to Slovenia, apart from the exceptions stipulated by law.

The application for the granting of the first temporary residence permit must be submitted at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C., or Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland, depending on where in the US you reside. 

Applicants from the following states should apply at the Consulate General in Cleveland: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin.

Applicants from the following states may apply at the Chicago Visa Application Center: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. Visa applications will be sent to the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Cleveland for decision making.

Applicants from all other States and District of Columbia may apply at the Visa Application Centers in Washington D.C., New York, Houston, Miami and San Francisco. Visa applications will be sent to the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington, D.C., for decision making.

Please consult with us whether you should submit residence permit application at the Slovenian diplomatic mission or at the Visa Application Centers abroad or whether you may or should lodge the application directly at the respective authority in Slovenia.  

REQUIREMENTS

• Application for a residence permit (contact the Embassy or Consulate for the application).
• Biometric data: recent photo size 3,5 x 4,5 cm, not older than six months, and digital capture of fingerprints.
• An original valid passport or certified copy (the expiry date of which exceeds the intended period of stay in the Republic of Slovenia by at least three months).
• Health insurance certificate covering urgent health care services in the Republic of Slovenia as a minimum requirement.
• Sufficient means of subsistence in a monthly amount at least equal to the basic minimal income in the Republic of Slovenia.
• A certificate of no criminal record not older than three months from applicant's country of origin, certified and translated into Slovenian (for US citizens: FBI Check certified with Apostille).

Aside from requirements listed above the applicants are also required to fulfill other conditions for the issue of the first temporary residence permit, all of which depend on the purpose of their stay in Slovenia.  

Legislatively recognized purposes for stay in Slovenia may be: 
• Employment or work,
• Family reunification with Slovenian citizen with permanent residence in Slovenia or with citizen of an EU and EEA country with a residence registration certificate issued in Slovenia, and, if requirements stipuated by Aliens Act are met, also with citizen of other country who has a residence permit in Slovenia,
• Studies, specialist training, participating in international exchange programs, participating in international volunteer exchange programs, 
• Research or educational work in the field of higher education,
• Slovenian descendant to the second generation in direct descent,
• Other justified reasons.

PLEASE NOTE: Retirement in Slovenia as such is not one of the recognized purposes for a residence permit. 

CONSULAR FEE

Consular fee for the residence permit is 127 EUR, which is calculated into USD monthly. It is currently 144 USD.
