Opening of the Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia in Seattle, WA
On Friday, October 19, the Ambassador of Slovenia Stanislav Vidovič opened a new Slovenian Consulate in Seattle, headed by Honorary Consul, Mr. Michael Biggins. Its consular district encompasses the state of Washington, with approximately 7.4 million inhabitants.
The opening ceremony was attended by a number of prominent representatives of political, economic and academic life, representatives of Slovenian community in the region and Seattle consular corps.
In his inaugural speech Ambassador highlighted that Slovenian government decided to open the Consulate in recognition of its dynamic business landscape which provides valuable opportunities for the deepening of the economic cooperation between Slovenia and the state of Washington. He emphasized the interest of Slovenia to further develop cooperation in other areas including in the field of research and science and to foster people to people contacts through projects and academic exchange between the universities and research institutions.
Prof. Michael Biggins is an affiliate professor of Slovene language in the Slavic Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Washington. He is an excellent connoisseur of Slovenian literary history and literature and has been promoting Slovenian literature for a number of years by translating numerous significant classical and modern works of Slovenian authors.
