Conclusion of this year's Embassy Adoption Program collaboration with the Lafayette Elementary School

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington has for the tenth consecutive year participated in the 2018/19 Embassy Adoption Program, part of the District of Columbia Public Schools and the Washington Performing Arts Society for the past 45 years. As part of the program, countries present their cultures to the children in public schools in Washington, DC.

This year, the Embassy highlighted bees and beekeeping under the program. During the presentation of Slovenia at their school in February, pupils of the Lafayette Elementary School enjoyed a traditional Slovenian breakfast and learned about the development and significance of beekeeping in Slovenia, the painted bee hive panels, honey and honey production, and the International Bee Day on May 20th was highlighted as a day that aims to raise the awareness of the world public about the importance of bees and other pollinators. Since the visit took place on the Slovenian cultural day, February 8, they also became acquainted with France Preseren and the significance of his poetry.

On Thursday, May 30, 2019, the fifth graders from Lafayette Elementary School presented their knowledge of Slovenia at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington as a culmination of their study of our country for the past year within the Embassy Adoption Program.

After the welcome address by Ambassador Vidovič and the honorary raising of the Slovenian flag outside the embassy, the students presented their knowledge of Slovenia through their poems, written about the bees and Slovenia to the staff at the embassy. They also viewed the two Slovenian AZ bee hives on exhibit at the embassy. They presented the Embassy with a beautifully illustrated book of their poems, which will become part of the permanent collection in the library. At the end of the program the students enjoyed potica, Slovenian honey and juice, and were awarded with small promotional gifts and books on Slovenia.
